Vijay’s Farewell Film ‘Jana Nayagan’ Hits Censor Roadblock Days Before Release

The Madras High Court is currently deciding whether the Jana Nayagan, the long-awaited Tamil film featuring actor-turned-politician C. Joseph Vijay will be produced or not. The movie, which is the supposedly final outing of Vijay before entering politics full-time, is set to be released in cinemas all over the world on January 9, 2026. The firm has, however, encountered delays in the issuance of its censor certificate, which has dragged the issue into the law court.

On January 6, Tuesday, Justice P.T. Asha instructed the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) to provide all documents on the matter of certification, including a complaint that has allegedly been received over the movie. The court has directed the CBFC to submit these documents to it on Wednesday, January 7, considering the film is going to be released very soon.

The case was initiated by the KVN Productions LLP who addressed the court on a case of serious financial, mental, and reputational losses as a result of the delay. The court was told by senior counsel Satish Parasaran representing the production house that the project had already been invested in to the tune of about 500 crore and that it was intended to be released in the theatre in the massive 5,000-screens worldwide.

The producers say that the post production was finished on December 15, 2025, and the film was handed in to the CBFC on December 18. The investigating committee allegedly advised a U/A 16+ certificate, with some deductions and amendments. These amendments were approved and brought to the full extent and the revised version was resubmitted on December 24.

Even though compliance was made, the CBFC responded after almost 10 days despite numerous requests in which the January 9 release plan was emphasized. On January 5, the producers were notified that the movie would be submitted to the revising committee after the complaint that some scenes were offensive to religion and portrayed the armed forces negatively.

The production house claimed that the complaint would not have been transparent since they did not know who the complainant is and details of the allegation. Counsel argued that certification should not be reopened on such a sophisticated basis on the basis of unverifiable and anonymous complaints, which was arbitrary and not according to the law.

Justice P. T. Asha now will go through the records at CBFC and then make a call which might either see Jana Nayagan released as scheduled.
