The World Chess Championship 2024: Gukesh Levels Scores with First Classical Win Against Ding

The World Chess Championship 2024: Ding Liren, the reigning FIDE World Champion, suffered his first classical defeat against Grandmaster Gukesh Dommaraju of India, and the match score reached 1.5-1.5 in the third game of the 2024 FIDE World Championship.

The keen fight happened on Wednesday and Gukesh proved his superior strategizing and stock management under challenging conditions.

This particular game started with a Queen’s Gambit Declined, an opening full of championship game histories. Another unconventional opening, even in super tournaments, came from Gukesh; his 7.h3 put them into an interesting middle game.

Though Ding made a comeback in the middle of the game, a tactical slip made him exchange a bishop for two pawns. When huge time pressure joined troubles belonging to Ding, Gukesh seized a moment to secure a victory.

After the game, Gukesh said during the interview that he was satisfied with his play in the game: “I felt good at the board, and today, I simply outplayed my opponent, which is always pleasant.” While he admitted to lapses at certain periods of the game, his accurate playing during match-defining moments earned an important draw.

Ding said that he had paid attention to the opening and had been shocked by the first move as well as did not know how to react.

But his calculations went on for a long time, and, in the end, Gukesh remained on top. The title was clinched when Gukesh came up with a stunning move on the 19th turn by moving his pawn to e4, attacking and capturing Ding’s bishop in the process.

This is also the first classical victory of Gukesh over the world champion in a similar competition. It also raises some new excitement for the championship as the players are going to the first rest day.

The fourth game is scheduled to continue on Friday, November 29, with Ding on the White side. After leveling the series to the best of nine, Lawson and Yeboah are expected to engage their fans in more dramatic battles in the additional two matches.

The scores are even, the forces are ready for the showdown, and the world observes keenly the championship game.
